Plato and Aristotle in Contemporary Ethics

(PHIL2232) -  Ευγενία Μυλωνάκη

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Towards the middle of the 20th century we witness a turn in the moral philosophy in the anglophone west towards the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle. This turn towards classical ethics in the context of 20th century moral concerns and realities radically changed the shape of contemporary philosophy. The aim of this class is to study this shift to the classical tradition and the impact it had in 21st century philosophy.

In this course, we will study closely the work of two of the most influential moral philosophers of the 21st century so far, who are reviving the moral thought of classical antiquity for the realities and questions of the 21st century. In the first part, after an introduction to contemporary Aristotelianism and Platonism, we will study the work of the Aristotelian philosopher, Jonathan Lear (in particular, his book Radical Hope), and in the second part of the course we will study the work of the Platonist philosopher, Sophie Grace Chappell (in particular, her book Epiphanies). In the course of studying these two seminal books of contemporary moral philosophy, we will consider the thought of other major figures of contemporary philosophy.
