The image shows the nucleus of a human cell replicating its genetic material. The black spherical structures within the nucleus are the nucleoli. The green regions surrounding the nucleoli and located near the nuclear envelope represent heterochromatin, while the yellow structures are sites of DNA replication, known as replication foci or “replication factories.” The cell belongs to the HeLa cell line, derived from a cervical epithelial cancer. The cells were isolated in 1951 from a 31-year-old African American woman in the United States and have since been continuously propagated in laboratories around the world. The image was acquired in the Laboratory of Biology using the School of Medicine’s confocal fluorescence microscope.
