Course description
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with linguistic conventions relevant to their discipline and common academic genres. It does so through the analysis of authentic material from various sources. More specifically, the course focuses on:
- Analysing linguistic features of academic writing.
- Examining the structure and language of different academic genres, including research and popular science articles, focusing on rersearch abstracts and literature reviews.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Effectively approach academic texts.
- Recognise and apply the features of academic writing.
- Enhance their reading and writing skills.
- Expand their understanding of discipline-specific language.
Course assessment
The course is assessed in ONE of the following three ways:
- Final exam only – 100%.
- In-class assignments (Weeks 5-11; you need to complete 5/7 assignments) + presentation – 100%.
Office hours
- Wednesday: 11:30-14:30.
- Thursday: 09:00-10:00.
