PhD Scholarships - The Magic Lab 
 

The Magic Lab seeks to appoint five full-time PhD Students in the following areas: Human-Robot Interaction, Social Robotics, Machine Learning for Robots, Robot Law and Ethics.

The Magic Lab at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is Australia's leading social robotics research lab. It is home to researchers in robotics, human-robot interaction, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cognitive science and computational law. Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple is a Distinguished Professor in the research team. The Magic Lab researchers have an extensive research network including Stanford University, Harvard University, Lund University, Leeds University, Patras University, and CNRS in France.

Value and duration

Up to five (5) Recipients will be selected for the Scholarship.

Successful candidates will be awarded a scholarship valued at the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate + $10,000 top up scholarship per annum over 3 years. Students can apply for an additional 6 months extension dependent upon satisfactory progress.

Who is eligible?

In order to be eligible for the Scholarship, candidates must be/have:

  • completed a (i) Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, (ii) 4 Year undergraduate degree with a research component or (iii) Master's by Research, or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment;
  • be able to commence a full-time PhD at UTS before the end of 2016.

Selection process

The recipient will demonstrate:

  • A strong desire to advance the field of social robotics
  • A passion for designing and building intelligent autonomous robots
  • An insatiable curiosity for human-robot interaction
  • A keen interest in social robots as a disruptive innovation in business and society
  • A willingness to contribute to and collaborate with The Magic Lab research team.
